Product Description:

From the author of Cracked Up to Be and Some Girls Are comes a gripping story about one girl’s search for clues into the mysterious death of her father.

When Eddie Reeves’s father commits suicide her life is consumed by the nagging question of why? Why when he was a legendary photographer and a brilliant teacher? Why when he seemed to find inspiration in everything he saw? And, most important, why when he had a daughter who loved him more than anyone else in the world? When she meets Culler Evans, a former student of her father’s and a photographer himself, an instant and dangerous attraction begins. Culler seems to know more about her father than she does and could possibly hold the key to the mystery surrounding his death. But Eddie’s vulnerability has weakened her and Culler Evans is getting too close. Her need for the truth keeps her hanging on...but are some questions better left unanswered?

My Thoughts:

Fall for Anything was a very emotional read, and sometimes it was difficult to read simply because the emotion was so raw.  The flow of the story was great, it didn't rush, and it wasn't drug out, it was just a great pacing.  The mystery of why her father would kill himself was also intriguing.  Since finding out why? is the most important thing for the main character, it also became the most important thing for me as a reader.

Eddie was a great character.  We never get to see her in her normal teenage day to day element because the book starts after the death of her father.  The Eddie we meet is an emotional wrung out shell who is determined to find an answer, no matter the cost to her or anyone else.

Milo, Eddie's best friend, was also a great character.  He was such a loyal friend, and although he really ticked me off a few times, you see how Eddie's grief is breaking his heart.  He really tried to be there for her but it was difficult for him at times.

Culler was a mystery character from the beginning to the end.  He was hot and intense and just what she thought she needed at that time in her life.  I never really connected with Culler as a main character though.  He just wasn't my type of guy and always seemed rather creepy IMO.

Overall, this is a heart-breaking tale of grief and the devastation left behind when someone commits suicide.  It's amazing how far the aftermath of one person's actions can spread and how hard it can all be to deal with.  I really liked that the book didn't wrap up with Eddie suddenly happy and moving on.  The death of a loved one is with you forever and this book really portrays that.

  4. I hadn't heard about this book but it sounds like a gripping emotional read. I'm very interested in reading this story. There are way too many kids growing up without one parent or the other in real life for various reasons, so this is a book that has a very timely subject.

  6. I must read this book now! It sounds like perfect research material for my WIP. I'm also playing around with the idea of a main character dealing with the death of a parent and investigating what actually happened. I really want to do it as a mystery, like this book, but mysteries are SO HARD! I liked what you said in the first paragraph about pacing--I'm realizing that pacing for a mystery is probably one of the most difficult things to do.

This book sounds really different for YA, and I'm excited about the chance to win it! Thank you!

  8. I think this sounds like a great read. A friend of mine just finished it and said things similar to you - very emotional, she too had to put it down and walk away a couple times. I don't know if I am ready for so much emotion - but I would love to try it. Please enter me in your giveaway. I am an old follower too, so I would love the extra entries. bevsharp@desch.org

  9. I really enjoy emotionally raw reads because it feels real. I'm a social worker and helping others to understand their own emotions is a very important part of my job. Suicide is an ugly, unfortunate event for anyone to experience, and bereavement can become very complicated for those loved ones left behind.

  10. This sounds like a very "real" story, with real human emotions. A lot of books I read don't have that and it is harder to empathize with the characters in those kind of stories.

  33. I usually don't like teenage books about death because the ones I've read mostly have the main character whining all the time and losing all purpose in like. This looks interesting since you say Eddie is an interesting character, and at least she has a purpose.

  54. Sadly, most people who commit suicide are feeling too much pain to think clearly or consider just how their actions will impact the people in their lives. Anger, hurt, confusion, guilt - all are reactions experienced by those left behind. It sounds like this book adresseses some of these to some degree.
