Don't Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala Review

Reading level: Ages 14 and up
Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: HarperTeen; (January 3, 2012)
ISBN-10: 0061766690
ISBN-13: 978-0061766695
Received From: Teen {Book} Scene/Author for Review
                   5 Butterflies

Synopsis:
Joy delamere is suffocating.
From asthma, from her parents, and from her boyfriend, Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out. She can take his cruel words, his tender words . . . until the night they go too far.
To escape, Joy sacrifices her suburban life to find the one who offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. He introduces her to a world of fierce loyalty, to its rules of survival, and to love—a world she won’t easily let go.
Set against the backdrop of the streets of Seattle, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the subtleties of abuse, the secrets we keep, and the ways to redemption. But above all, it is an unflinching story about the extraordinary lengths one girl will go to discover her own strength.

My Thoughts:

Don't Breathe a Word is a powerful, emotional novel, that took me on an incredible journey through the depths that one girl would go to escape, and what it truly means to feel alive.  I absolutely loved everything about this book.  I was swept away with Joy's story.  I really felt her heartbreak as she left behind her family to escape an abusive relationship.  I understood each of her motives, why she was doing what she was doing, and making the decisions she did for herself.

As she begins to live her life on the streets, and starts to see and experience things she never seen before, she discovers that she is so much stronger than she ever imagined she could be.  When she meets back up with Creed, the boy she has only ran into once before, and they begin to fall in love, their story is both heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time.

Holly Cupala absolutely blew me away with her first book, TELL ME A SECRET, and she has taken my breath away with DON'T BREATHE A WORD.  Don't Breathe a Word has continued to stick with  me long after finishing it, and I'm sure it will be making the list of favorite books of the year.  I can't wait to see what Holly Cupala has in store for us next.

Happy Birthday to Me Tour: Into the Past with Brian Rowe

Today I have Brian Rowe here as part of the Happy Birthday to Me Tour with a look into his reading past...

I’ve been a reading fiend my whole life, so I definitely don’t have to rack my brain too hard for some choices. At age 5, I probably was heavy into the picture books. One of the best I can remember is The Polar Express, which was also turned into a movie in 2004. At age 11, I would have been really into the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine (from age 9 to 11 I liked to read nothing but gross-out horror stories). The best of the Goosebumps books was Say Cheese and Die! At age 16, I was finally getting into the Harry Potter series, which Iavoided for a few years until the first book weaved its spell against me. The best of the Harry Potter books? Still Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. And at age 20, I was a sophomore in college, and really into perusing more adult titles. My favorite book from this era of my life was probably A Home at the End of the World, by Michael Cunningham. I still love it, and have beenthinking about re-reading it. I’m 27 years old now, and enjoying the Hunger Games trilogy, as well as the classic Roald Dahl books. So I seem to be going back in time. Maybe when I’m 35, I’ll pick up The Polar Express again. But maybe when that time comes, I’ll be reading it to my own children.

Thanks so much for that great post Brian!! Love your choices, a few of my favorites are on that list!

Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Flyaway Tour: Character Interview + Giveaway

About Flyaway:
Fifteen-year-old Stevie Calhoun is used to taking care of herself. But one night, her mom, who works as an exotic dancer in a downtown Seattle nightclub, never comes home.

That’s the night Stevie’s life turns upside down.

It’s the night that kicks off an extraordinary summer: the summer Stevie has to stay with her annoyingly perfect Aunt Mindy; the summer she learns to care for injured and abandoned birds; the summer she gets to know Alan, the meanest guy in high school.

But most of all, it’s the summer she finds out the truth about Mom.

FLYAWAY is the story of a teen girl’s struggle to hold on to what she’s always believed, even as her world spins out of control

Today I have Stevie, from Flyaway here to answer a few questions, as part of the Flyaway tour.

1. How is life going at Aunt Mindy's house now? Are you adjusting any better?

Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I’m pretty much getting used to living at Aunt Mindy’s. She let me fix up my room some – I painted my walls dark purple and found a leopard print bedspread – and she says she trusts me now, so she’s lightened up on the whole rules thing. I still miss Mom sometimes, especially when I wear the ankle bracelet she made me or see someone that looks like her, but it doesn’t hurt as bad as it used to.

2. Do you think seeing your mom struggling with drugs helped you to resist the peer pressure of drugs yourself?

For sure. I like having fun just as much as anybody, and if I hadn’t seen what drugs did to Mom, I would have believed Tonya and Doug and The Professor and thought they were no big deal. But the truth is, I did see how drugs changed her, and I didn’t want any part of that.

3. Why do you think you resisted your Aunt Mindy's help so much in the beginning?

Look, you’ve got to understand that all I’d ever heard about Mindy was that she was snooty and stingy and always had her big fat nose in Mom’s business. Not only that, I was scared stiff she was going to get Mom in trouble and I’d get stuck in a foster home or something. I wasn’t ready to believe anything bad about Mom – which meant I also couldn’t believe anything good about Aunt Mindy.

4. Why do you think your mother started out on the path she did?

You mean with drugs? I don’t know. I’m guessing someone at the club turned her on to meth and introduced her to Drake. Aunt Mindy told me how, when they were kids, Mom was always getting into trouble, and I guess she’s still like that. If something looks like a good time, she goes ahead and does it without worrying about the fallout.

5. How are you and Alan doing?? *raises eyebrows suggestively*

None of your damn beeswax! Just kidding. We’re good. Now that I can drive (yup, Aunt Mindy took me in to get the old driver’s license), I’m over at his place all the time. He decided to go for his G.E.D., and I’m helping him study. I’ll let you imagine what those study sessions are like! *wiggles eyebrows up and down*

Thanks for answering my questions Stevie! Glad you're doing well!

You can enter to win your own copy of Flyaway!!

Just leave a meaningful comment on this interview!

A Dog's Purpose Tour: Ten's List with W. Bruce Cameron

Today is my stop on the A Dog's Purpose Tour!

Top 10 Things my Dog has Taught Me

1. Almost nothing you’re doing can’t be improved by adding bacon.

2. When it comes to kisses, there’s no such thing as too much tongue.

3. Always eat your favorite things first.

4. Chew what you want; if you don’t like it you can always spit it out on the carpet.

5. Some dogs’ butts smell better than others.

6. Cats are fun to chase, but if they don’t run you’d better pretend you can’t see them or they’ll rip off your lips.

7. If you’re allowed on the bed once it means that’s where you should always sleep from that point on.

8. Every once in awhile you should knock over the trash can and eat the contents just to see if your person has forgotten that you’re not supposed to.

9. People always ask if you want to go for a walk even though the answer is pretty obvious.

10. A dog’s life is always improved by the addition of a person… and vise versa.
